McAdams' work is an exploration of how fundamental aspects of painting (i.e. gesture, colour, line, form, support) are expressed or represented through the filter of software and print technology, and how this filtering can offer artists new possibilities for image-making. McAdams' is interested in examining how the use of software can facilitate inventive perspectives and therefore progress for the medium, and in how new image-making modalities can evolve from expansive material perspectives.
These paintings are portraits of interiority, in the sense of representing an imaginary digital space as well as the intimate internal space of memory. The works seek to reconcile digital and analog approaches to the medium of painting through a process of translation from one to the other, in both directions. The canvas paintings seek to make real what is conceived of in a digital realm, while the digital prints allude to or echo the particular physicality of a painted surface.
Deirdre McAdams is a visual artist living and working in Vancouver, BC. She is a graduate of Emily Carr University of Art and Design (2008), and the Victoria College of Art (2003), where she studied painting. She was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2011 RBC Painting Competition, as well as a prize in 2010 from Canadian Art Magazine for her writing on contemporary art, and has received multiple grants from the BC Arts Council. Her recent exhibitions include solo shows at CSA Space in Vancouver and G Gallery in Toronto. She is currently a MFA candidate at the University of Guelph and was recently granted the Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship (SSHRC).
